Today I learned there’s a lockout preventing you from moving the shifter straight from 5th to reverse. Stupid Lancer.

This was my weekend, summed up in a meme. Silly 2.5L Jetta.

A buddy of mine got a free Ford Fiesta once. The shitty 90s box style. I went to shift from 4 to 5th. Nogo, only 4 gears. Scary shit on the highway.

I’ve done this more times than I care to remember. Especially since TX raised its speed limits to 75, and my Golf revs higher than I’m used to. I tend to shift based on the the sound of the engine, and the higher revs often catch me out.

That has nothing on my morning: I drove many highway miles without stopping in my automatic transmission car. When I finally stopped, I instinctively tried to shift into first to take off and tried to push my nonexistent clutch. I shifted into reverse.

At least a quarter of the time I drive my CRX I do this

Haha, my lockout is the grinding noise it makes when you try to put it in reverse at speed

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten into an automatic and tried to push the clutch in when coming to a stop, only to stomp the edge of the brake pedal and almost end up kissing the steering wheel.

I had a very similar experience not long ago. I have now owned an automatic E90 for 3-odd years after driving a 5sp manual Mazda3 for 4 before that. The other day I was making a three point turn and tried to instinctively push the clutch and push the shifter all the way right and down for reverse... Freudian shift...?

I used to drive a 4-speed Toyota Tercel. Once in a while I would still hunt for the mysterious 5th gear, hoping the shifter was just stuck.

I got one better: yesterday I took my Sonic through a drive through and reached for the non-existent manual crank to lower the window

I have a manual bmw so instead of accidentally getting reverse instead ot sixth, I get reverse instead of first.

Loan my 5 speed manual car to my brother for the day to go across state. Returns it with the comment that is gets lousy gas mileage and revs too high. I ask if he knew it was a 5 speed. No, he says, I thought it was a 4 speed.

My xB is a 5-speed, my ‘64 c10 pickup is a 3-speed. Driving the truck is interesting as *all* my shift pattern instincts are wrong. First in the xB is reverse in the truck, so at least once in nearly every trip i the truck I nearly back into the car behind me at a light. Also 1st is non-syncro & where 2nd “should” be, so when I instinctively try and downshift to 2nd at low speeds I instead grind first. And on the highway I keep trying to shift into the other two gears that aren’t there.

I have never mistook the brake for a clutch, but I have stomped the dead pedal pretty hard once or twice when an “Oh Shit” braking has happened.

I also just realized when I moved it again just now that I probably shifted into neutral when I came to a stop, too.

I used to do that a lot before I lost my last car with crank windows about 6 months ago.

At least the manufacturers haven’t added something that looks, feels, and moves like one in the same location while it has a distinctly different purpose (and controls motion of the car - dangerous!)...

For the past 10 years when I have visited home, I have driven my parents van around since it was sort of a spare car. I live across the country so I visited only one or twice per year. The van had a column shifter. So when they sold it, and told me “take the mazda instead” I got to the end of the driveway and instead of putting it from reverse into forward I .....turned the windshield wipers on very forcefully.

Good one smart guy.
